San Diego Kiteboarders

Wow, just a little wind last Sunday!

I caught an early session in the mad crazy ocean and then a sunset session at Stinkies. As gusty as it was, I actually had more fun at Stinkies! The ocean was a mess and I was overpowered on a 12m. The bay had emptied out as people got tired and went home. I was still overpowered on the 12m but had a lot more fun. This will teach me to leave my 8m in the garage!

I took a few pics of the day and they are up on my picasaweb site. Check them out here: http://picasaweb.google.com/will.hise/Stinkies11092008

Dan even kited after dark and I got some funny flash shots of him. They are at the end of the album linked above. Nothing was funnier than watching Rahul throw a crazy powered unhooked roll (back?) and explode so hard on the water his kite leash broke! I had to chase his kite down the beach and thought I might be getting my pants wet to grab it. We had a good laugh on it all.

It was a pretty crazy day and I did see a lot of insane stuff happen on the beach. Clueless people launching kites that were too big and getting spanked, people still riding without a kite leash, and even people putting up 15 and 16m kites in those winds. Just because there is wind, doesn't mean it's the best day to head out! Be careful out there! I hope everyone made it back safely.

Nice pics, I wish I could have been there, I was out of town. So you were out there with the 12 M Thruster, pretty good, that is good know since the smallest kite I have now is the 12 M Thruster.

I can hold the 12 up to 30mph (not knots!) on my 142 board. It's not comfortable at that point and sheeting in will rocket you to the sky. I've done in a few times now and I'm certain that 30mph is my limit for that kite. I'm sure I could hop on a tiny board and be more comfortable, but it's smarter to cut down to a smaller kite.

There were moments at Tourmo where it got real close to 30mph just judging on the feeling in my kite. Crazy day!

If you can find one for cheap, grab a 2008 8m thruster or 6m nano. Sweet kites for higher wind!
