Owen's new video

In case anyone doesn't know Owen, he's our local 9 yr old ripper! Owen can be found riding Stinkies and he'll probably be upwind of you. He's riding awesome and having a blast while doing it! His dad Scott (Elvis) put together this amazing video of him. Check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uzeMw-lM8I Continue

Chasin' it

Well, looking at some forecasts it looks like only good bet for wind this weekend is San Quintin. Damnit. I really don't want to deal with Mexico. Flu, gangs, Montezuma, car jackers, armed check points. suck! Looks like central Cali is getting rain or gusty winds. Isabella might work, but it's an inland lake. Any ideas kids? Continue

Sunday 11/09/2008

Wow, just a little wind last Sunday! I caught an early session in the mad crazy ocean and then a sunset session at Stinkies. As gusty as it was, I actually had more fun at Stinkies! The ocean was a mess and I was overpowered on a 12m. The bay had emptied out as people got tired and went home. I was still overpowered on the 12m but had a lot more fun. This will teach me to leave my 8m in the garage! I took a few pics of the day and they are up on my picasaweb site. Check them out here: http://p… Continue

slowing down?

Ya, so this site seems to be slowing down traffic wise. I know a lot of you out there are not sitting at a computer all day (like some of us) and probably only check the site every few weeks. Is there anything we can do to make the site more interesting? Maybe to get more people to blog their sessions? I'm up for suggestions. This site was put up as an experiment to see if we could get people communicating online. The next experiment will be how to get people to continue participating. Things… Continue

Stay out of Tourmo on the summer weekends!

I just got a call about a kiter on a lime green Best kite that was kiting Tourmo on Sunday (8/17). Apparently the kiter couldn't stay upwind for whatever reason (lack of wind? lack of skill?) and was walking their kite back up the beach every few minutes. I REALLY hate to police our spots but we will get kicked out and banned from places like Tourmo if something goes wrong on a crowded summer day! Everyone please please please use good judgment and stay away from Tourmo in summer unless the beac… Continue

Ass old pics

Just to embarrass Dan and I, I've found some really old pics of us back when we really couldn't kite. Pics are here These are from 2003-2004. I did notice that all my recent statements that Stinkies was crowded even back then are totally wrong. Check out how few kites there were out there! Of course Laroy was there! Man I hate that gear! I wish we had bow kites and cool boards! Continue

wakeboarding

So with the lack of wind in SD, I've managed to hitch a ride on a friend's boat and go wakeboarding a few times now. I didn't come from a wake background and only really did it in high school from time to time back when knee boarding was cool (actually, it never was). I can ride around, but I basically suck. It's such a trip how much harder on your body it is than kiting. I was super sore after the first few trips. My knees kill after each session, but it's super fun! The boards are quite diff… Continue

Traveling with gear harder than ever

I'm headed off to Hatteras in a little over a week and I've started thinking about packing. Decided to read exactly what the ass-monkeys at Continental did to their baggage policy to rape travelers and guess what, it sucks. http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/checkbag.aspx Basically, it's $25 to check a second bag. All bags still have to be under 50lbs so no stuffing your first bag. Kite gear now costs $95 and there's no way any kite board bag is under their stupid "lin… Continue

multiple sd ning sites

Was playing around with the ning.com site today to see what other kiteboarding sites are out there and I noticed that Ronan has tried to move the old forum www.sandiegokiteboarding.com to Ning. So now there are 2 identically named Ning communities. His new one is here: http://sandiegokiteboarding.ning.com/ There are no members on the new site, so I'm not sure what he's trying to do. I hope he's reading this site and will join us here. There really is no reason to have two Ning communities and I… Continue

Wacky low-end Stinkies day

Had to take my truck to the shop, AGAIN and decided to hit Stinkies for some low-end gusty shifty wind today. I hear that the Strand was a lot of fun and blew for hours. Stinkies did not. Dan and I showed up and watched Mike (GK flyin', surfboard ridin', Ann Marie hubbie) rig and ride. Obviously gusty but the gusts looked ridable. We both rigged and went out for some 6-14mph crap. The lulls were terrible and it took everything we had to keep kites in the air. Gusts were just enough to try some… Continue

Disappointing winds and bad forecasts

No kiting for me last weekend (3/29-3/30) since the forecasters can't seem to get anything right. I was able to give lessons both days which was great and we may soon have a new kite girl ripper! It was fun to see everyone turn out on Sunday thanks to a rocking forecast of high teens wind. Course we were all greeted to sub teens and a few moments of 10-12. I even went so far as to email the forecasters at ikitesurf asking if they could explain what happened to our weather. Did we have too much… Continue

Paul Menta steals Arnie/Mike thunder

First off, where'd everybody go?! I feel so alone on here. The lonely internet.... Anyway, who listened to the ASNews podcast with Paul Menta of Kitehouse fame? I can't believe he chose Grand Cayman for a new kite house! I seem to remember some other people I know coming up with that idea. And, I have to say, I didn't think it would work there, but I guess if you're Mr Menta and have lots of money you can make it work. For those of you who don't know, a group of SD kiters have been going to Gr… Continue

Trunks over our wetties

I had to post this, it made me laugh: http://www.sbckiteboard.com/oped?news_id=316&uniqid=1101 I'll admit that kiting without my trunks feels really strange. No problem surfing without them, but stand up paddling sits somewhere in the middle. It's almost a style thing, I stand around so much on the SUP I want to look good doing it! Wearing a spandex suit isn't that flattering, but throw some kick ass trunks on the top and suddenly, I'm Batman! Continue

Vacation planning, kite jonesing

Still bummed I was out of town for last weekend's winds, I've been thinking about trips for the next few months. I've also got a brand new Liquid Force 6'2" Rawson quad (man, that's a long name) that's itching to get wet. Nothing's worse than spending heaps of money on new toys that you can't play with! So, trip ideas. * Sounds like we're doing a local trip for April spring break rather than TX. I'm not sure I want to do a full week off work (well, I "want" to, but I shouldn't). So I might mak… Continue

Fun old board-offs and other old school tricks. Now we need someone to come along and mix these things with some unhooked dangle passes! Greg, I vote for you. Continue

Come on everyone! Blog a bit!

I know you're all checking out the site from time to time. Why not drop a little blog while you're here? This site can only work if we all put content up here and blogging takes only a few seconds. Tell us about your latest session, or lack there of. Tell us about your ideas for the next kite trip. Tell us what you're interested in demo'ing in Pismo. Tell us about the new sick board you have your eye on. It's easy to blog. Go to your homepage and click the "keep a blog" link. Type something, su… Continue

Checking out the water quality sites today and it looks like everything from the Strand to TJ is closed due to a combined sewage overflow. Ew. http://www.earth911.org/waterquality/default.asp?beach_id=1&cluster=1 Continue
